Desperately Seeking a Director

Recently I’ve been consulting on a couple of theatre projects and the challenge of finding a director has come up.  Here is my advice on how to find the right director for your project.

Talk to your friends, peers and colleagues.  See if there is anyone they have worked with or heard about who stands out.  If this doesn’t lead you to the right person it’s time for some leg work.

If you are producing a play – go see theatre; if you are producing a film, go to film festivals.  This is a great way to see their work and many times there are opportunities to  speak with the director face to face after the performance or the screening.  I have never hired a director whose work I have not experienced first hand.  I would also suggest reading theatre/festival reviews.  It is not only important to experience the director’s…
