Once I have a solid script and am ready to move forward with a production the first thing I like to know is ‘how much will it take to get the project off the ground?’

There are several factors to take into account when creating a budget. First of all will you be producing a workshop/fringe production or a full scale production?  How long will it run?  One Night? One Weekend? One Month? (You can always extend the project when it does well).  Will it be an Equity production (Union or Non-Union)?

For some productions the budget is determined by the needs of the show (some scripts are more elaborate than others), others are contingent on how much money/resources you have access to.  My rule of thumb, like in any business, is – don’t spend any money until you have to.  Rehearse in your living room the first couple of…
